A Day in the Life Of... Spring Green Lawn Care |
A Day In The Life Of A Spring - Green Lawn Care Franchise Owner:A Tale of Two Seasons - A Day in the Life of Charlie Marshall As a Spring-Green Lawn Care franchise owner, the somewhat seasonal nature of our business means my average day during "peak season" is quite different than an average "off peak" day. For starters, I'll describe a typical March or April day when our business is in full swing and proceed through the year.
For me, the spring season is a time of both excitement and anxiety. This is both the peak selling season and the most time sensitive production period of the year. My day usually starts out with a 6:45 a.m. meeting at the shop with my team members to discuss the day's schedule and to help out as they ready their vehicles for production. By 7:30 a.m., the service team is going full speed servicing both residential and commercial properties with lawn and tree care applications. In the office, the phone is ringing steadily with calls from new prospects and existing customers alike. For about a six- to eight-week period, I spend a good part of the day making sales on the phone and talking with existing customers. When the pace of phone calls allows it, my attention goes to scheduling the next day's work, entering sales, production and payments on the computer and making sure my team members have everything they need to deliver a quality service to our customers. I often work a few hours at night or on the weekends this time of year to keep on top of things but I always make the time to see my kids off to school each day and am home in time for dinner with my family. This is not very difficult really as my office is in my house and my shop is only a few miles away.
As the spring frenzy subsides, I have more time to spend in the field with my service team to make sure things are looking good on our customers' properties. I will often get involved with sales and service calls, as well as with production which is a great way to keep in shape and burn off a few pounds. By mid-summer, I spend about half of my workday in the field as the office work is much less demanding than during the spring. Our service crews are starting a little earlier in the day and are usually back in the shop by 2 p.m. to avoid the hottest part of the day. I find I like this schedule also and spend many summer afternoons at the pool with my kids. Opportunities for add-on sales are abound this time of year and into the fall with services such as insect and disease control, tree and shrub care, lawn aeration and seeding. Early fall is another peak production period when the six- to eight-week seeding season brings us up to spring-like production numbers and more time in the office for me. It's hard work at times but the additional revenue generated from seeding and other add-on services drops nicely to the bottom line.
While the freedom of owning a Spring-Green franchise allows me the flexibility to spend time with my family and pursue my hobbies most of the year, things really get good in the late fall and winter. The phone calls slow and production proceeds at a steady but relaxed pace, allowing plenty of opportunities to enjoy lazy afternoons and long weekends with my wife and two young children, maybe even to sneak off for a few days of golf or fishing with friends. The slower periods also provide an opportunity to prepare business and marketing plans for the next season and to make sure our trucks and equipment are in top shape and to provide classroom training and education for our service team members. On thing that is always certain after the winter lull, everybody starts getting excited (and maybe a little anxious) for the coming spring.
