The IRS has just announced plans to step up its monitoring of the tax preparation industry with new registration, testing and continuing education standards for tax preparers that will be phased in during the next few years. The first step the IRS will take is to send out 10,000 letters to tax preparers "among those with large volumes of specific tax returns where the IRS typically sees frequent errors."
